Donald Bruce Barkell,

DONALD BRUCE BARKELL,

2021

BARKELL, Donald Bruce – He was one of the best! A great husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all. Don died unexpectedly due to complications after surgery at Health Sciences North on April 15, 2018. He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 52 years Marilyn (Coghlan), daughters Tracey Barkell, Amanda (Trevor) Condie, Paula (Neal) Henderson and by 10 grandchildren (his pride and joy) Brianna Barkell, Nicholas, Jacob, Sean (McGonigal), Kate, Erica, Andrea, Caroline (Condie), Jamie and Ryan (Henderson). Don was predeceased by his parents Harry and Mayme, brother Ross, son-in-law John McGonigal, brothers-in-law Claire Mitchell, Malcolm Doyle and sister-in-law Lucy Beland. Don is also survived and forever remembered by his brother Brian (Harmonie), sisters Doreen, Marilyn, Patricia (Frank Laframboise), sister-in-law Shirley Barkell and numerous nieces and nephews who thought the world of him. His in-laws Ken (Vera), Brian, Charlene (Ken) Zeta all who thought the “Big Guy” was the best! During his years of employment at Adam’s Mine and raising a family, he endeavored to continue his education and obtained his bachelor of arts degree. “Sticky” as he was known to his teammates (Pies Panthers), loved to play slow pitch and basketball. He enjoyed the after game pint as well. He was often seen with his grandchildren and gave them all his attention and love. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kirkland & District Hospital Foundation (145 Government Road East, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4) would be appreciated. They went above and beyond in providing excellent care while in ICU. A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.AquaCremation:

I came to know Mr Barkell as a young lad, as I use to have to walk home by the Barkell household (Lebel) to get to my house on Queen St. I was attending Queen Elizabeth Public School and I was often curious about the yardwork, grass cutting etc that he would be engaged in. Since 6 years old, as I would walk by the house I would ask him “Hey Mr Barkell, what you up to ?” ..He always had a good comeback that would make my eyebrow wrinkle. My condolences to the Barkell Family

Marilyn and Barkell family, please accept our sympathies on the loss of a great guy. Our Teck Hotel Oldtymers’ baseball team had a special and sometimes intense rivalry with Pies Panthers but we always put that aside for a post-game pint, some friendly conversation and Don’s signature ear-to-ear grin which more often than not was the ice-breaker after a hard fought game.

Bill & Jo-Ann Glover, March 1, 2021

Joe and Barb Hosken, March 1, 2021

Dear Marilyn. We are so saddened by Don’s passing. We have special memories of a gentle giant of a man and a great friend. We are so glad that we happened to meet in Sudbury to maybe help lighten your load for at least a short time. Long before Pie’s Panther era our pickup team was playing Adams Mine and my glasses got shattered with a foul ball. Adams Mine’s big Don insisted that I go to the clinic. He took me to the old Neelands Clinic and waited until I was checked out. We enjoyed our time together over the years with the Panther family. He will be greatfully missed and fondly remembered.

Dave and Leona Sylvester, March 1, 2021

Sorry to hear of Don’s passing, a very kind and friendly man. Worked at the Adams also and found Don always in a happy frame of mind and dedicated to his daughters figure skating.

George Goode, March 1, 2021

Dear Marilyn, Tracey, Amanda, Paula and family…………. Myrta and I have so much sorrow and sadness for the loss of Don. The many years together throughout our children’s skating world, was a special bond of friends. I Sid, so often think about the figure skating years where Don and I would be setting up props and lighting for our club’s “Ice Skating Show” and looking forward to the performance. Don’s hilarious character was always present when talking about those years plus our growing up years in Chaput-Hughes. He was truly a dear friend. One of my favourite memories of Don is of a day in the old arena when this giant of a man bent down on his knees to console his tiny figure skating daughter. One of my last memories of him was at the new arena after the latest ice show put on by the skating club. You, Marilyn and Don, were such a good team for your family and the skating club. Thank you, Myrta.

Linda Conrad, March 1, 2021

We arrived in Kirkland Lake as kids hoping to establish careers and meet new people. Little did we realize that joining the Pies Panther family would make our time in K.L. some of the best of our lives. Over 25 years later and those ties are still strong. On the field, after the game socializing or getting together to enjoy each others company to mark a special occasion. Don was always there to share a story, a laugh or hand out some sage advice. Heaven just got a heck of a pitcher and an even better teammate. We will miss our friend deeply. You are all in our thoughts. Sincerest condolences Brigitte and Gord

Thoughts & Prayers Marilyn & Family. Just the after game pops, and Pie socials this man enriched our lives. May the creator be with you all. Going to miss our To Tame ( friend ). Lorne & Daisy

Lorne Tyrer, March 1, 2021

To Marilyn, Tracey, Amanda, Paula, all family and friends: It is so hard to lose any family member or friend, but when the person is as Loving, kind, caring, nonjudgmental, “ETC.” as Don (Sticky) was, and when it comes so unexpectedly, the shock and the loss seem unbearable. There is so much that can be said about Don, but he would want us to think about each other. So I offer my sincere prayers and condolences and add this – a person cannot be as Loving as Don was without Christ present in him, for Christ is Love Personified. Dwell not on your loss, but instead, try to remember all that made Don who he was. Cherish memories and comfort each other. He is now preparing the new home with a ball field out back. For Don: Eternal Rest grant unto Don, Oh Lord, and may Your Perpetual Light shine upon him. God bless all.

Doug Barker, March 1, 2021
