I came to know Mr Barkell as a young lad, as I use to have to walk home by the Barkell household (Lebel) to get to my house on Queen St. I was attending Queen Elizabeth Public School and I was often curious about the yardwork, grass cutting etc that he would be engaged in. Since 6 years old, as I would walk by the house I would ask him “Hey Mr Barkell, what you up to ?” ..He always had a good comeback that would make my eyebrow wrinkle. Our Teck Hotel Oldtymers’ baseball team had a special and sometimes intense rivalry with Pies Panthers but we always put that aside for a post-game pint, some friendly conversation and Don’s signature ear-to-ear grin which more often than not was the ice-breaker after a hard fought game.

Dear Marilyn. We are so saddened by Don’s passing. We have special memories of a gentle giant of a man and a great friend. We are so glad that we happened to meet in Sudbury to maybe help lighten your load for at least a short time. Long before Pie’s Panther era our pickup team was playing Adams Mine and my glasses got shattered with a foul ball. Adams Mine’s big Don insisted that I go to the clinic. He took me to the old Neelands Clinic and waited until I was checked out. We enjoyed our time together over the years with the Panther family. He will be greatfully missed and fondly remembered.

Sorry to hear of Don’s passing, a very kind and friendly man. Worked at the Adams also and found Don always in a happy frame of mind and dedicated to his daughters figure skating.

Dear Marilyn, Tracey, Amanda, Paula and family…………. Myrta and I have so much sorrow and sadness for the loss of Don. The many years together throughout our children’s skating world, was a special bond of friends. I Sid, so often think about the figure skating years where Don and I would be setting up props and lighting for our club’s “Ice Skating Show” and looking forward to the performance. Don’s hilarious character was always present when talking about those years plus our growing up years in Chaput-Hughes. He was truly a dear friend. One of my favourite memories of Don is of a day in the old arena when this giant of a man bent down on his knees to console his tiny figure skating daughter. One of my last memories of him was at the new arena after the latest ice show put on by the skating club. You, Marilyn and Don, were such a good team for your family and the skating club. We arrived in Kirkland Lake as kids hoping to establish careers and meet new people. Little did we realize that joining the Pies Panther family would make our time in K.L. some of the best of our lives. Over 25 years later and those ties are still strong. On the field, after the game socializing or getting together to enjoy each others company to mark a special occasion. Don was always there to share a story, a laugh or hand out some sage advice.
